No mask requirement outdoors, no curfew, the current situation in Fuerteventura in July

The regulations for travel warnings and compulsory quarantines have been severely defused and so it is much easier to spend a holiday in the Canary Islands this summer. Here is the current situation in Fuerteventura in July 2021.

Hello surfer,

There has been no German travel warning for the Canary Islands since mid-May. The vaccination progress is not only great on the European mainland but also on the Canary Islands. All my friends here on Fuerteventura have now been vaccinated twice.

The German travel warning has been lifted since mid-May. The probability of a new travel warning is now significantly lower, because many countries, including Germany, have changed the standards for this, because now the part of the population is vaccinated that is most susceptible to a serious disease course after being infected with the Corona Virus.
In the case of Germany, this means that travel warnings are only issued from an incidence of 200.

Nevertheless, there are of course some unanswered questions before a trip to Fuerteventura.
Here are probably the most important questions for most holidays when planning a holiday in Fuerteventura:

Can you go on holiday in Fuerteventura in summer?

Of course!
There were border closings only in the last year (2020) in the first three months of the pandemic. So you have been able to travel to Fuerteventura normally for over a year.

Last autumn, this winter 2021 and of course also in spring we had nice guests here in our courses and accommodations.
Our surf school and accommodations are also open now and we are running surf courses this week as well.

For our guests, next to nothing changes in the implementation of the course. Of course, we adhere to the rules on disinfection, safety distances and group sizes. However, most of the time we are outdoors in sun and wind and almost never in closed rooms - so sun, wind and salt water are always there as natural disinfectants!

Are shops and restaurants open in Fuerteventura?

The restaurants and shops on Fuerteventura are open and have been open all last year!

In the Canary Islands and especially here on Fuerteventura, all restaurants have an outdoor area. On the terraces, of course, there are also rules for the maximum number of people at the table and minimum distances.
The restaurants never had to be closed.

It may be the case that the interior areas of individual restaurants remain closed. But actually nobody on Fuerteventura wants to sit inside the restaurant anyway, because it is always sunny and warm here and at night you can see a breathtaking starry sky.

In the shops (as well as in all public indoor areas), of course, a mask is required. In addition, you have to disinfect your hands when entering. Sometimes you may have to wait a bit before going to the store if there are too many people in the store at the same time.

Where do I have to wear a mask in Fuerteventura?

First of all, here are all the places where I do NOT have to wear a mask in Fuerteventura:
• Outdoors
• On the beach and of course not while bathing, swimming or surfing.
• During sports such as jogging, cycling, climbing, sakteboarding, volleyball and much more.
• Outside built-up areas, for example when exploring the wild west coast of La Pared by mountain bike or going on a hike.

A mask must STILL be worn in this place on Fuerteventura. At the moment there is a debate in Spain about easing the mask requirement, which also partially applies outdoors.
• In public transport
• On the way to the beach in our surf school cars
• In the interiors of restaurants or shops
• In all public areas, such as the police station, municipal administration or hotel reception
• Outdoors if you cannot keep the minimum distance of 2 meters, but there are no places in Fuerteventura where this is the case.

Is there a curfew in Fuerteventura?

No!
The curfew was lifted across Spain in May.
However, this does not mean that the discos are open again here on Fueteventura or that nighttime celebrations are allowed. There are still regulations on the maximum group size at meetings that are controlled by the police and, in the event of violations, are sometimes subject to sensitive fines.

Conclusion

Nothing stands in the way of a relaxed surfing holiday in Fuerteventura. In the meantime, the mask requirement has been lifted outdoors. Thanks to the progress in vaccination on the European mainland and especially on the Canary Islands, the threshold for travel warnings has been raised significantly, so the probability that mandatory quarantines will occur again is low.
