Learn to Surf for Beginners
Our beginner surf course with surf instructor Derek
In our beginner surf course you will learn the fundamentals of surfing step by step – safely, effectively and with plenty of fun in the water.
The most important maneuver in surfing is standing up on the board – the take-off. This technique allows you to ride the wave while standing on your surfboard.

Derek explains how to do the take-off correctly:
"Hello, I'm Derek. I started surfing as a child and have been a surf instructor with the OTRO MODO Surfschool team for 10 years. Today I’ll explain how to get up on the board properly when learning to surf."
Take-Off on a Whitewater Wave
How to Get Up on Your Surfboard
Of course, it’s important to have the right position on your surfboard – not too far forward and not too far back – so the board can glide smoothly on the water.
Now the right wave is coming. Don’t forget: paddle two more strokes. You need the momentum so your board becomes fast enough and doesn’t sink.
Now it’s time: push yourself up with both hands at shoulder level and use the momentum to bring your feet onto the board in one smooth movement. Your stance should be about shoulder-width apart, with your front foot roughly where your chest was before. Turn your head and upper body slightly in the direction of the ride – and you’re surfing!
And of course, don’t forget the joyful shout: Yipieeeeeeeeee!!!!
Derek’s Tips:

"From experience I know that everyone gets up on the surfboard a little differently. That’s why in our beginner surf course we teach you three different techniques for the take-off.
You can then choose the method that feels easiest for you. This way, most beginners learn to stand up on the board after a short time.
Don’t forget: the correct position of your feet decides whether you stay on the board or fall off. Especially at the beginning, you should pay close attention to your foot placement and not rush the take-off.
Enjoy the waves!
Derek"
